Trebuchet

Here are two shots of the trebuchet mentioned earlier. We found several project sites for trebs ranging from 12" to 12' tall. The throwing arm is 33" long, scaled down from 42". These are really easy to build and are great fun even if you're only launching golf balls.

Several years ago I was a Boy Scout leader and had the great idea of building a treb myself. Me and my boys build a very large working model and launched an old Yamaha motorcycle 178' in the desert off highway 395 in CA. We also threw pumkins, rocks and several full gallons of milk with food coloring in them. Although the launching was fun, the two nights I spend in the county jail for contributing to the delinquency of minors was not.
The moral to the story is check with local government on launching regulations and get permits to launch where availible.

Wow. I'd never have considered that. I'm not ready to build a treb quite that large though. If we build another hurling engine of any kind, I'd like to tackle a rope tension ballista. We currently have what amounts to a large tripod-mounted slingshot that could be improved quite a bit. If we upgrade her I'll post pics.
